The Dental Extraction Process

If you’re experiencing dental pain, you should visit us promptly for an exam and 3D digital X-ray so we can discover if you need an extraction. A dental extraction may be necessary for various reasons, such as tooth decay, severe dental trauma, or impacted teeth.

When you do need an extraction, we’ll perform one of two procedures, using a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable.

Surgical Extraction

Most often, impacted teeth or otherwise difficult-to-access teeth require a surgical extraction.

This procedure involves making an incision in your gums and carefully peeling the tissue back to access your tooth. Sometimes, we may have the perfect angle to pull the tooth right out of your jaw, using specialized tools. However, this isn’t always the case.

When your tooth is still inaccessible, we’ll need to break it up into smaller parts, removing each piece individually. Unfortunately, this is time-consuming and often requires a long healing period. While swelling and bruising of the jaw are normal post-procedure, over-the-counter pain medication is usually enough to relieve any pain or discomfort.

Simple Extraction

The simple extraction process is gentle on your gums to facilitate faster healing.

Fortunately, not all dental extraction procedures work the same way. If your tooth is accessible, we can remove it through a simple extraction process.

Simple extractions are straightforward and don’t require any incisions in your mouth. Instead, we use specialized dental tools to gently loosen the tooth from its socket. Usually, we can pull the tooth out in one piece, but we may break it up into pieces if necessary.

This gentle procedure provides faster healing, allowing you to return to your everyday life in just 48 – 72 hours! While some pain and discomfort are usual after a simple extraction, over-the-counter medicine will be enough to manage it.

After either dental extraction, we will flush out any debris from your tooth’s socket and move on to the healing stage.

After a Dental Extraction

Following your extraction procedure, we will provide you with the necessary steps to take while healing.

Right after the extraction, you’ll bite down on a gauze pad to help create a blood clot in your socket. This blood clot is a naturally forming healing agent that helps your gums heal faster! However, the clot is fragile and requires attentive care. Using straws, participating in strenuous activity, and eating certain hard or crunchy foods can interfere with your blood clot, significantly slowing your healing process.

If you experience pain and swelling, we recommend using an ice pack and taking any medications we prescribed to you. Additionally, keeping your head elevated is a great way to protect your surgical site.

Once your gums heal, we generally recommend replacing your missing tooth as soon as possible.

Introducing: Mini Dental Implants

Natural teeth have roots that keep your smile in place and maintain your jawbone’s health through stimulation. Without roots, your jaw will resorb, losing mass and volume over time. Fortunately, dental implants act as artificial tooth roots to stimulate your bone and prevent bone resorption while replacing your missing tooth!

At Brent Bradford, DDS, we offer mini dental implants as an innovative solution to tooth loss.

These titanium implants are small, allowing us to use a minimally invasive procedure for placement. With no incisions or stitches, mini implants facilitate faster healing and support temporary restorations immediately after placement. In just 21 days, we can secure a final crown on your implant, completing your smile with a functional and natural-looking restoration!
