Time is valuable because we only have so much of it. With only 24 hours in a day and 60 minutes in an hour, what you do with your time matters a lot. Spending time at the dentist is hard enough, but for some patients, the idea of coming back for a second appointment is a nightmare. However, some treatments require multiple appointments, especially if you need a temporary solution first. But at Brent Bradford, DDS, we recognize the value of your time. To make your life easier and to skip any temporary steps, we offer CEREC crown treatment! These restorations cover broken, damaged, or decaying teeth in a single appointment, with no temporary crown necessary.
The Traditional Two-Part Crown Process
Traditionally, getting a dental crown was a multi-step process. These tooth-shaped caps cover damaged teeth, keeping your smile functional and protecting vulnerable teeth from infection. But because they’re custom-made, the process takes time.
First, we take an impression of your smile. Before modern technology was available, we used to take impressions with a goop-like material that hardened into a usable model. But now, we use digital scanning to avoid messy impressions and make your appointments faster.
Once we had the impression, we sent it to a lab where dental technicians made your dental crown. These restorations are customized to match your remaining teeth, so this process takes anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks. While you wait, we would supply you with a temporary crown to wear.
Temporary crowns are quick covers we use to protect your tooth and keep your smile functional. But they’re far from the final product we place in your smile. These temporary restorations often don’t fit perfectly, can be uncomfortable, and may even fall out. Many patients find the entire temporary crown process to be a hassle. Fortunately, with CEREC crown treatment, we cut that step out entirely!
The CEREC Crown Difference in Syracuse, NY
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The machine helps design and craft your custom crown through state-of-the-art CAD/CAM technology.
The process is simple. When you come into our office, we take a digital impression of your smile without messy goop. Then, we use the CEREC machine to design your custom crown. With this innovative technology, we can pay incredible attention to detail, making your crown resemble a natural tooth in size, shape, and color. Once a 3D model of your crown is ready, we’ll use the CEREC machine to craft the restoration.
A CEREC crown is made out of a durable ceramic material. If you’ve ever seen someone carve a block of wood or stone, this process is pretty similar, but on a much smaller scale. We start with a block of ceramic. Then the machine mills the block into the shape of your crown. The entire milling process is done in about 15-20 minutes and is done through advanced computer manufacturing. With the CEREC machine in our office, we can design, craft, and place your final crown in just one appointment.
The Benefits of CEREC Crown Treatment
Using the CEREC machine to craft your crown in-house provides a variety of benefits over more traditional dental crown methods, including:
- Fewer appointments: Traditional dental crown treatment involves at least two appointments. The process includes one visit to take the impression and one visit to place the crown. The CEREC crown process eliminates the need for two appointments, as we design, craft, and place your crown in one day.
- No temporary restorations: With the traditional method, you must wear a temporary crown while you wait for your final crown. But this temporary solution is often a hassle. A CEREC machine lets patients skip this step and receive a final crown the same day.
- Better aesthetics: Many other crown solutions use metal as a base, fusing porcelain or ceramic to the metal for a more natural look. But CEREC crowns are made purely of ceramic, avoiding any metal that can dull the white of your tooth.
Unfortunately, not everyone is eligible for CEREC crown treatment. But in most cases, we find that patients in Syracuse, NY, and the surrounding areas are good candidates for the procedure!
