Why Do Traditional Dentures Loosen?
When you lose teeth, you lose the entire tooth’s structure, including the crown and the root. While the crown is the portion of the tooth you can see resting above your gum line, your root is the portion you can’t see below the gum line!
These tooth roots are embedded into your jawbone and provide important stimulation when you chew or bite. This stimulation keeps your jawbone healthy and dense. Without it, your jawbone will begin to shrink through a process called bone resorption.
Traditional dentures are designed to replace the crowns of your teeth but, unfortunately, not the roots. Because your prosthetic simply rests on your gums, your jawbone goes unstimulated while you chew and loses both mass and volume over time. Why Use Mini Implants for Denture Stability?
In general, there are two types of dental implants.
Traditional Dental Implants
Traditional dental implants are around 5 millimeters in width and consist of multiple components held together by an implant screw. To place these implants, an incision must be made in your gums, and a series of increasingly large drills are used to create a hole in your jawbone to fit the implant body. Unfortunately, due to bone resorption, many patients lack sufficient jawbone structure to secure these implants. While additional procedures like a bone graft helps, they add to the length and cost of your procedure.
These implants take around 6-9 months to heal fully, as each part is placed separately, and the implant needs time to stabilize in your bone. Though effective and secure, traditional implants have a long and invasive procedure that many patients don’t qualify for.
Mini Dental Implants
In contrast, mini dental implants are less than 3 millimeters in width and have a sleek one-piece design! To place these implants, we don’t need to make any incisions or use sutures. Instead, we create a small pilot hole in the gums and jawbone and then gently screw the implant in place.
Due to their smaller hole, patients with reduced jawbone density are often still eligible for mini implant procedures—even without a bone graft! Once in your jawbone, mini implants become instantly secure enough to support a temporary, or in some cases final, restoration. For implant dentures, we order your final denture ahead of time so that when it arrives, we can place your implants and denture on the same day!
Mini dental implants take around 21 days to heal completely, and you have beautiful and functional teeth the entire time!

Due to their smaller diameter and one-piece design, mini implants are a much more affordable procedure than traditional implants. Additional procedures like bone grafts are often unnecessary for mini implants, and in combination with their fewer parts and appointments, patients generally pay less!
