Conventional Implants vs Mini Dental Implants
In the following video, Brent Bradford, DDS, explains the differences that distinguish miniature dental implants from traditional ones.
The primary distinction between a conventional implant and a mini implant lies in the implantation procedure. Although both types are made from the same titanium alloy material, their construction and installation processes differ significantly. The mini implant is a one-piece design that is directly inserted into the jawbone.
In contrast, a conventional implant consists of multiple components: the implant body that integrates with the bone and an abutment that is attached on top of this body. This multi-part structure of conventional implants can potentially lead to a space where bacteria may collect, possibly causing peri-implantitis, a condition characterized by bone loss around the implant threads.
One of the major advantages of mini implants is their minimally invasive placement method. A small pilot hole is created in the gum and bone, and the implant is immediately inserted, eliminating the need for complex surgery. This approach results in a procedure that is less invasive and typically less painful for the patient. Additionally, the treatment time is shorter, and the cost of a mini implant is about half that of a conventional implant.
