When did you last enjoy a juicy steak or a crisp apple? It shouldn’t be too difficult to picture for many people, as it may have been just a few days, weeks, or months ago. Unfortunately, some haven’t been able to enjoy these common foods in years. Patients with traditional dentures are all too familiar with the struggles of chewing. As traditional dentures become loose over time, breaking down foods is more difficult, often resulting in drastic diet changes. The lower denture is usually the worst culprit, as it relies on your unstable jawbone for support. Fortunately, Brent Bradford, DDS, provides an innovative solution that allows you to secure your lower denture with dental implants! With implants in place, you can smile and eat securely.

The Drawbacks of Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are designed to perfectly fit the contours of your mouth. Unfortunately, their fit doesn’t last, as lower dentures rely on your jawbone for support, which changes shape over time.

Natural teeth have tooth roots embedded into your jawbone, keeping your smile secure and stimulating your jaw when you bite or chew. This stimulation is essential to keep your jawbone full and healthy. Without it, your bone will resorb, losing mass and volume.

The longer you go without replacing these roots, the more bone structure you’ll lose! While traditional dentures do replace missing teeth, they don’t replace missing tooth roots, which allows your jawbone to continue shrinking, resulting in ill-fitting dentures.

Common consequences for loose dentures are:

  • Suffering gum irritation: As loose dentures shift on your gums when you eat or speak, your gums become more irritated. Extreme irritation may result in raw spots, bleeding, and an increased risk of infections.
  • Developing denture sores: Constant friction against your gums also leads to painful denture sores or blisters, making wearing dentures painful.
  • Experiencing difficulty chewing: The combination of sore gums and shifting dentures makes eating much more difficult for patients. Traditional dentures lack the force of your natural teeth, limiting your dietary options. With loose dentures, you may need to change your diet, avoiding tough or hard foods that have important nutrients for your body!

Fortunately, by using dental implants for lower denture stability, we can restore your ability to talk, laugh, and eat comfortably.

Secure Your Lower Denture With Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium posts we place in the jawbone to support artificial restorations and act as artificial tooth roots! With these implants in place, we stop bone resorption while restoring your smile. At Brent Bradford, DDS, we offer two kinds of dental implants.

Traditional dental implants are around 5 mm in diameter and consist of multiple parts. Due to their size, we need to make an incision in your gums to access your jaw. Then, we use a series of drills increasing in size to create a hole large enough to fit the implant.

Unfortunately, many patients lack sufficient jawbone material for this procedure due to bone resorption. While additional procedures like a bone graft help to replenish lost bone, they add to both the length and price of your procedure.

Traditional implants are incredibly stable and effective. However, we often prefer to use mini implants whenever possible as they are just as stable and have many additional benefits.

Mini dental implants are less than 3 mm in diameter and are one piece of titanium. Because of their smaller size, we use a minimally invasive procedure that allows for much faster healing. Additionally, their one-piece design allows us to place them in a single appointment, where they are stable immediately after placement! These implants provide faster healing and results, often at a lower price.

With mini implant dentures, you can enjoy your favorite meals again without the hassle of a traditional implant procedure.
