Traditional Dentures vs. Implant Retained Dentures
Traditional dentures are custom-fit to the contours of your mouth. Unfortunately, this fit doesn’t last.
These prosthetics rest on your gums, using your jawbone for support. Your bone, however, makes for a poor foundation after tooth loss.
Natural teeth have roots that stimulate your jaw when you chew or bite. Stimulation helps keep your jawbone solid and strong. But when you lose teeth, you lose stimulation, resulting in the loss of bone mass and volume.
Over time, your bone will shrink and shift, causing your prosthetic to no longer fit. This movement causes your dentures to slide around on your gums, irritating the tissues and making it more difficult to do everyday tasks like eating or speaking!
Fortunately, dental implants retain your dentures, providing a much more stable solution. These implants both secure your smile and replace your missing tooth roots, keeping your jawbone healthy.
Implant dentures provide numerous benefits to patients, as they’re incredibly secure. With dental implants anchoring your prosthesis to your jawbone, you can eat, speak, and laugh without hesitation or fear of your dentures slipping out of your mouth.
If you’re looking for a more secure smile, implant dentures may be the solution for you!
Utilizing Mini Dental Implants
At Brent Bradford, DDS, we use two kinds of dental implants.
Conventional dental implants are larger in diameter, about 5 millimeters. These implants require ample jawbone to secure, which may be a problem for those with minimal bone structure.
Mini dental implants, in contrast, are much smaller. These implants are less than 3 millimeters and feature a unique one-piece design. Due to this structure, mini implants require a much less invasive placement procedure that we can complete in only one appointment!
We simply make a pilot hole in your jaw and use it as a guide to place the implants. Once in your bone, mini implants immediately begin to stabilize. In most cases, we place your implants and secure your final denture restoration in just one day!
Additionally, mini dental implants are less expensive than their conventional counterparts. With fewer components and appointments, these implants are almost half the cost.
Our Implant Retained Denture Options
We offer three distinct mini implant retained dentures at our office, with a range of removability. These include:
Snap-on overdentures: This prosthetic is similar to a traditional denture in that it utilizes a denture base to rest on your gums. However, rather than relying solely on your gums, we use implants to retain it! By placing 4 to 8 mini implants around your jawbone, we stabilize this denture and provide a secure, yet still removable, denture option.
- Semi-permanent roundhouse bridges: Unlike a Snap-on overdenture, this prosthetic is much sleeker and is never removed by you. Secured by 6 to 10 mini implants, a semi-permanent roundhouse bridge replaces a full arch of teeth while requiring less of the denture base. Instead, it follows the horseshoe-like shape of your jaw, providing a more natural appearance. Additionally, only we can remove this prosthetic.
- Permanent roundhouse bridges: Using 10 to 12 mini implants, we secure this restoration on your jawbone using dental cement. This denture is non-removable, as even we don’t remove it at routine dental visits. Instead, it functions similarly to your natural teeth, not even requiring a denture base for support! With its natural appearance and feel, this denture is the closest you can get to having your natural teeth back.
During your free implant consultation, we will discuss your denture goals, pricing, and your flexible financing options.
