The Dangers of Ignoring Periodontal Disease

In the following video, Brent Bradford, DDS, explains the systemic risks posed when any stage of periodontal disease goes untreated.

Neglecting periodontal disease can lead to serious consequences, the most severe being tooth loss. Recent studies have revealed a connection between periodontal disease and other medical issues.

The bacteria from gum disease can enter the bloodstream, especially when the gums bleed, potentially affecting the entire body. This bacteria has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease and can complicate the management of diabetes, making it harder to control blood sugar levels. Interestingly, improving dental health can lead to better management of these health conditions.

One of the earliest warning signs of periodontal disease is bleeding gums during brushing. If your gums are swollen, painful, or bleeding, it’s a signal that you should contact your dentist promptly for an evaluation. Taking care of your gum health is not just about preserving your teeth; it’s about safeguarding your overall health.
