What is Juvéderm™?
Juvéderm™ is an injectable, smooth gel dermal filler for the correction of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. It comes from non-animal sourced hyaluronic acid (HA), which is naturally occurring in the body.
How does Juvéderm™ work?
Juvéderm™ is injected below facial folds and wrinkles to fill the area just below the surface of the skin, lifting it. Cross-linking of the HA, which is the chemical processing of HA to bind strands of polymers to each other, extends duration. More cross-linking means more resistance to enzymatic degradation; without cross-linking, HA would be absorbed into the body in less than a week.
Because Juvéderm™ is created with proprietary HYLACROSS™ technology (high amounts of cross-linked HA), it creates a smooth-consistency gel which results in a smooth, natural look and feel for patients and not a granular-consistency gel like other HA dermal fillers.
The Procedure
In terms of the actual Juvéderm™ injectable gel treatment, it’s an in-office procedure. There can be some discomfort injecting into facial folds, but pain management is fairly routine with local anesthetic.

Your skin consists of two layers known as the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, acts as the skin’s primary defense against the environment. The dermis, or innermost layer of the skin, is composed primarily of connective tissue and provides the skin with a support network. Getting Started....
What to Expect
Because JUVÉDERM® XC is a simple, nonsurgical wrinkle treatment, there is minimal recovery or downtime (and the results are instant!). So you can make an appointment to stop by Dr. Bradford's office for treatment on the way home from work or the gym, or even while the kids are at soccer practice—and get right back to your daily routine. Here's what to expect when you visit Dr. Brent Bradford's office for treatment. (Please note that although this experience is typical, the routine at Dr. Bradford's office may be different.)
Before you go
Dr. Bradford recommends that you avoid any medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), for at least a week prior to receiving the treatment for wrinkles in order to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
When you Arrive
If this is your first visit, Dr. Bradford and his staff will ask about your medical history, including any allergies you may have or medications you may take, and will tell you more about treatment with JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel.
Determining Your Needs
If Dr. Bradford determines that JUVÉDERM® XC is right for you, he will then examine the soft tissue of your face to assess the depth of wrinkles and folds to determine your treatment for wrinkles. JUVÉDERM® XC is indicated for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, (such as nasolabial folds). JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gel is available in two formulations—JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC for versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds in the skin, and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC, a robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles in the skin. This allows your healthcare professional to better tailor treatment to your unique skin volume needs. We may even take pre-treatment photographs so you can see the difference after receiving the treatment!
The Treatment
Dr. Bradford will utilize anesthetic to numb the treatment areas, before placing the JUVÉDERM® XC to improve comfort during treatment. Dr. Bradford may also elect to use a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area before the injections. Dr. Bradford will then ease the JUVÉDERM® XC under your skin (where wrinkles and folds occur) to replace lost skin volume. Following the injection, Dr. Bradford may gently massage the treated areas. The procedure is quick and easy and the results are instant!JUVÉDERM® treatment usually takes only about 15 minutes.
Post-treatment
You should avoid the following for at least 24 hours after treatment:
- - Strenuous exercise
- - Consumption of alcoholic beverages
- - Extended exposure to sun or heat
You may experience tenderness, temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, and bumps at the injection sites. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period. Be sure to report any redness and/or visible swelling that last for more than a few days (or any other symptoms that cause you concern) after receiving treatment to Dr. Bradford at 315-458-8844. Our office staff will tell you when makeup may be applied after your wrinkle treatment. We give each patient take home care instructions upon leaving Dr. Bradford's office after each treatment. You will also receive a post care call from Dr. Bradford or his staff after treatment.
Seeing Results
You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one injectable dermal filler treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing and improve skin volume. Just one treatment with JUVÉDERM® XC can smooth away your wrinkles for up to 1 year! However, results from injectable dermal fillers may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental “Enhancement” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal correction of your wrinkles and folds.
Most subjects acquired optimal correction at initial treatment. Some subjects required up to 2 "Enhancements" to achieve optimal correction.
